1pm – “Kitchen Renovations: Nightmares or Nosegays?”

Presenter: Ken Dempsey, NorthShore kitchens Plus, Inc.

Poorly planned kitchen renovations can result in unfulfilled expectations, limited functionality, incredible stress and, in extreme cases, even lawsuits.  Conversely, carefully crafted kitchen plans can yield spaces that please the senses like a perfectly blended bouquet, a bouquet that might grace the tables as the aromas of good wine, cheese and a simmering sauce prepare to entice family or friends to dine together.

A 35-year veteran of the home renovation industry, NorthShore Kitchens' Ken Dempsey is pleased to speak at this year's Marblehead Home & Garden Show about how to avoid the pitfalls that can occur with kitchen renovations.  He will cover seven topics that will guide prospective kitchen renovators in a step-by-step process geared to making the process practical, educational, beneficial to homeowners, and... fun!

1:30pm – “Are You Protecting Your Family from ALL Dangers of Carbon Monoxide?”

Presenter: Jeff Waldman, Waldman Plumbing & Heating

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless and odorless gas that is poisonous to people and animals because it displaces oxygen in the blood.  Most people know that CO is dangerous at high levels, but most people do not know how our health is affected by lower level exposure.

Millions of homeowners are exposed to low levels of CO and don’t even know it.  Unfortunately UL-listed CO alarms don’t go off until your family has been exposed to 70ppm (parts per million) for over 3-1/2 hours!  This presentation will give people the tools and knowledge to protect themselves and their family from ALL dangers of CO.  It will also explain how to know for sure if your family’s health is being damaged by the Silent Killer.

2pm - Clues, Telltale Signs, and Red Flags: A Primer for Home Buyers and Sellers”

Presented by Bob Erbetta, Management Design Associates, Marblehead

Buying a house? Putting one on the market?  Renovating?

If you are thinking of buying a house or having your house listed for sale, there are a few critical things you need to  consider for your own protection.  There are, in many homes,  telltale signs, hints and clues that may be  symptoms of major problems or defects.  Some are obvious, like missing roof shingles; others are more subtle, like moss growing around the exterior foundation wall.

The goal of this presentation is to provide the prospective home buyer or seller with a way of looking carefully at a building (theirs or yours) before signing a Purchase Sale Agreement or listing your home for sale.  You’ll get a prepared checklist of conditions to be aware of and to rate for their importance to your purchase or sale.  It will provide you, the buyer or seller, with a document that can become the basis of further evaluation by a professional, licensed home inspector. It can also become evidence for the wisdom of deferring the purchase [or sale] of a property.

Other topics we’ll examine:

How to select a qualified home inspector: Licensing, recommendations, experience, costs, extra services, etc.

How to evaluate and understand  a home inspection report.

The value of a  pre-listing inspection.

The recommended “punch list” for new-construction home buyers.

Renovation project guidelines (the pluses and pitfalls).

There will be a Question & Answer session.

Bob Erbetta has been inspecting and improving new and old buildings (both residential and commercial) on the North Shore for more than 27 years, as a Massachusetts licensed home inspector and construction supervisor for both contemporary  and antique dwellings.
